Summary: What began as the Nardi family barber shop in 1894 has evolved into one of Rome’s leading day spa destinations for the well-heeled locals. Nardi Day Spa is located in the upscale Parioli district, home to many of the international embassies as well as high ranking government compounds.
The two-story, 10,000-square foot converted palazzo includes a colorfully modern, full-service salon, day spa, small coffee bar with a dining terrace, and a boutique with displays so precise and so beautiful it almost seemed a crime to ruin them by buying something.
The spa specializes in hydromassage and mechanical treatments to tone specific body areas, but the most popular treatments are the facials using local skin care lines as well as Aveda products from the US.
The treatment rooms were far from the minimalist spaces we have come to know in American spas. It was hard not to be mesmerized by all of the exquisite architectural details above the treatment table, from the crown moldings on the walls to the plaster embellishments on the ceiling that revealed a glimpse of the past glory of this grand old building. The therapist, Maria, was limited in her English but not in her skills. She had an intuitive touch and was a skilled reader of skin, knowing just what was needed to get that post-jet lag glow back.
Chromotherapy played a big part of the ambience in the common areas. It was incorporated primarily through lighting features in the boutique and café. The color story was limited to yellow, orange and green, but it created a subtly stimulating energy that kept the mood in the day spa upbeat and light. The only weak link in this otherwise exceptional facility and experience was the lack of a shower in the locker room. It’s an essential element and always a surprise when it’s missing, especially from an upscale spa like this.
